The IV Therapy Death That's Finally Changing the Med Spa Industry (Justice for Jennifer Cleveland)

"I've been waiting for this to happen. I really thought they were never going to prosecute these people." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

She walked into a med spa on a Tuesday morning. By noon, she was gone.

The day before she died, Jenifer Cleveland posted on Facebook: "The Luxe Medspa By Amber Johnson will definitely make you look and feel beautiful!" She was 47 years old, a mom of four, and a beloved radio personality in Fairfield, Texas. She had zero reason to think that drip would be her last.

Nearly three years later, murder charges have finally been filed. On the latest episode of Med Spa Confidential, med spa attorney Courtney Walker joined me to break it all down. And I have to be honest with you. I'm not just covering this story. I've been fighting for this moment.

What Actually Happened Inside That Room

"There is no quicker way to kill someone than to hang an IV with the wrong thing in it." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

On July 10, 2023, Jenifer Cleveland walked into Luxe Med Spa in Wortham, Texas. Within minutes of receiving her IV infusion, she was in cardiac arrest. The infusion was administered by spa owner Amber Johnson, a woman with no medical license, no nursing credentials, and no formal medical training of any kind.

The IV contained a vitamin B complex, ascorbic acid, cyanocobalamin, and TPN electrolytes. That solution requires a prescription and is known to cause dangerous complications because of the potassium chloride in it. That potassium stopped her heart.

Jenifer became unresponsive at 11:31 a.m. Staff performed CPR. EMS rushed her to Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, Texas. She was pronounced dead at 12:24 p.m. She never regained consciousness.

The Doctor Who Was 106 Miles Away

"He's been to medical school. He knows how complex and how dangerous it is to hang an IV. The idea that he was enabling this person to do this is just unconscionable." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

The spa's listed medical director was Dr. Michael Patrick Gallagher, an anesthesiologist based in Frisco, Texas. He was more than 100 miles away when Jenifer died. No licensed medical personnel were physically present at the facility that day.

And it wasn't just that one day. Investigations revealed that Gallagher rarely visited the spa, failed to implement any protocols or standard operating procedures for IV services, and had an informal, unsigned medical director agreement documenting his entire relationship with the spa. Johnson was able to order TPN and other prescription-only solutions using his credentials.

That's how an unlicensed operator gets access to hospital-grade drugs. That's how a woman dies getting what she thought was a wellness treatment. This wasn't an accident waiting to happen. It was a system designed to fail.

The $500 Secret Nobody Is Talking About

"The going rate for an absentee medical director is $500 a month. They're renting out their medical license and they think you can do anything with that." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

I want you to really sit with that number for a second. Five hundred dollars a month. That's what some doctors are charging to put their name on a wall while unlicensed operators run the show. They're ordering IVs. They're ordering Botox. They're administering prescription drugs. All of it totally illegal.

This is one of the most dangerous open secrets in the wellness industry. And it is not rare. It is rampant. It is happening right now in cities across this country, and most patients have absolutely no idea.

Murder Charges. Finally.

"This man is going to jail. I think they both are, and I think that is rightly so." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

Amber Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on charges of felony murder, criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter, delivery of a dangerous drug, practicing medicine without a license, and tampering with physical evidence.

Dr. Gallagher was arrested on April 29, 2026, and booked into Freestone County Jail on a single count of murder, along with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and multiple drug delivery charges. His bond totaled $96,500.

Three years. But it finally happened. And as Courtney said on the episode, we are no longer in a climate where the worst that happens is a three-month license suspension. People are losing their liberty now. That changes everything.

A Law Was Born From This Tragedy

Jenifer's death didn't just make headlines. It changed the law. Governor Abbott signed Jenifer's Law on June 20, 2025, and it went into effect statewide on September 1, 2025. The law mandates that elective IV therapy outside of licensed medical facilities can only be administered by registered nurses or advanced practice nurses under proper physician supervision.

One woman's death forced an entire state to act. I want every med spa owner and every patient listening to understand what that means. The industry is being watched. The law is catching up. And the days of looking the other way are over.

What You Need to Do Before Your Next Appointment

"For anyone listening or watching, absentee medical directors have been put on notice. And if you are not licensed to practice medicine yourself, you are also on notice." — Dr. Kate Dee, Med Spa Confidential

Whether you're a patient or a provider, I want you to hear me clearly on this. Before you sit in that chair, ask who is holding the needle. Ask to see their license and ask who the medical director is and whether they have ever actually been inside that building.

If you are a med spa owner or injector, this case is your wake-up call. Compliance is not optional. Oversight is not a formality. Real people are paying for our industry's shortcuts with their lives, and the justice system is finally paying attention.

I started Med Spa Confidential because patients deserve the truth before they book. This episode is exactly why.

Listen to the full conversation with Courtney Walker. Share it with someone you love. And please, before your next appointment, ask the questions that could save your life.
